Purpose. Meaning. Motivation. Happiness.
These words must be something that YouTube uses in their algorithm to get me to watch their videos on a daily basis. Today’s video had a catchy title, “How to UnF*ck Your Life” by James Smith.
Before you click to watch his video, please be aware that this is more of a bulleted list of what he’s learned in 10 years on how to get a better life. He has a lot of statements that I will agree on but some comments could shake anybody’s world. It’s also more than 30 minutes… I listed as best as I could while I got ready for work this morning.
I’m not privy to his audience–probably mostly male? It’s really an assumption. He has a male perspective on life and discusses balding and its effect on our society. Health checks like testing levels of testosterone. dives into his video discussing dating, its world, and the use of dating apps. He discusses values and morals–things that are critical in knowing who you are and what to look for in a significant other. He goes on to talk about risk and reward. This video really is a collection of what he’s learned so far in his life and I hope folks take a close listen.
Fast forward towards the end of the video and he mentioned something that I had to replay at least a few times to really understand what he means. In the last five minutes of his video, he comments on how mental health shouldn’t be compared. Everyone is going through something one way or another. It’s a solid conclusion to the other concepts he mentioned in the video earlier.

There are two concepts he believes are vitally important, happiness and pleasure. Knowing the difference between the two could be turning to things that are for pleasure (his examples are booze, drugs, porn) to fill a void of happiness. If you don’t have an understanding of what makes you happy, you might ‘fill your quota’ with pleasure.
I’m surprised that I didn’t miss this gem, “…you can live a life with happiness without pleasure…You cannot live a life of pleasure without happiness”. I still had to go back and hear his words again to really comprehend what he was preaching. There was a point this year (maybe several now that I think about it) that I found no more joy in my hobbies and work. I lost my sense of purpose and had no happiness. To this day, I’m not sure what got me out…I think I ended up buying a nicer gaming monitor!! It definitely wasn’t the drinking.
He goes on to give examples, money isn’t everything, don’t live for the material world, find purpose. Having a higher salary with more stress would fall under the category of ‘pleasure’ since you receive more money.
What are your thoughts on James Smith’s video on unf*cking your life? Do you agree with some of his concepts? Would you add to his list?
